Our Story

Why Clevergreen?

Clevergreen Cleaners was established in 2006, by our founder, Farshad Sayan, backed by over 25 years of experience in the dry cleaning industry. From the beginning, our mission was to redefine dry cleaning by creating a process that is safe for people, gentle on garments, and better for the environment.

At the time, more than 90 percent of Boston-area cleaners were still using perchloroethylene (perc) or petroleum-based solvents. These chemicals, now recognized by the EPA as potentially hazardous and carcinogenic, were the industry standard. We knew there had to be a better way.

After researching all available options, we selected GreenEarth as the safest solvent on the market. Instead of using large machines that require powerful motors and complex filtration systems to reuse solvent through extraction and evaporation, we adopted a vapor-based process that significantly reduces energy use while still delivering high-quality results.

We also made it a priority to reduce toxicity at every step. Our detergents are hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, minimizing residues that come into contact with your skin. Traditional spotting agents often rely on petroleum derivatives, but all of ours are biodegradable and safe to use and dispose of without contaminating wastewater.

To conserve water, we implemented a tower system that recirculates the water used to cool the solvent during cleaning. This helps prevent overheating, which can damage delicate or embellished garments, while keeping water usage to a minimum. Rather than installing a fully automated plant with motorized rails and racks, we opted for an energy-efficient assembly system. This choice allows us to keep operations lean while further lowering our environmental impact.

Over the past two decades, we’ve operated in six locations and currently serve the Boston area from four. Throughout this time, we’ve adapted to major shifts in the industry—from evolving workplace dress standards and the rise of casual, remote workwear to growing demand for specialty cleaning and eco-conscious services. As traditional dry cleaning needs have changed, we’ve continued to pivot, expanding our offerings and investing in sustainable technologies to meet our customers where they are. Despite challenges like the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve remained resilient, continuing to support our community as a small, local business.

Our reputation for quality and environmental integrity has made us a trusted partner to clients in Boston’s arts and entertainment industry, including clients like the Boston Ballet, Boston Opera House, and films nationwide through New England Studios. We’ve also been featured in outlets like The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and NPR.

If you care about the environment, value your wardrobe, and prioritize your health, we invite you to experience the Clevergreen difference.
